Insulators and surge arresters

What you need

The electric power transmission and distribution systems need higher levels of security and reliability not only for the low voltage, but even for medium and high voltage. In the first case, their reliability should facilitate the communication sector and the related data's transmission; in the second, they must allow the endurance of the transmission service. Type tests only aren't enough to ensure the reliability of the design over the years. For this specific reason, the International standards have established tests able to simulate accelerated aging and any environmental stresses (pollution tests), both in HVAC (alternating current) and HVDC (direct current). Insulators and surge arresters have also benefited from new productive technologies, linked to the use of cable systems with extruded insulation, where the use of porcelain today have been supplanted by new types of composite materials. This change has increased their market share, thanks to their intrinsic flexibility of use and their easiness of implementation and maintenance.

What we do

Besides the type tests (electrical and non-electrical), CESI can perform special tests like high and low temperature (-30 ºC / + 65ºC) tests, salt fog pollution tests, electrical/mechanical endurance tests, internal arc tests up to current of 63 kA 3 s, fire behavior tests, seismic tests and so on. All these tests can be performed for electrical equipment from 1 kV and up to 500kV and they are following all major international norms as IEC 60099-4, 62217, 61109, 61462, 61952, 62231, 60383-1/- 2 and 60507, 60437, 61284 or 61467. Examples of Insulators (AC & DC) and Surge Arresters tests:

  • Dielectric tests (PD, LI & PF dry or wet, RIV and artificial pollution tests) of equipment rated up to 500kV
  • Mechanical tests, internal pressure test, bending test, tightness test, cantilever failing load test
  • Accelerated weather ageing test, tracking and erosion tests, dye penetration test, water diffusion test, salt fog test
  • Current impulse withstand tests, Operating duty tests, pressure relief tests, short-circuit tests

Particularly, FGH can give a very specialized assistance for pollution tests (AC and DC) and CESI offers the opportunity to analyze any components' failures during testing.

Why CESI

CESI has started to deal with Insulators and Surge Arresters tests since the 1967 SACOI project, with experiences on oil-insulated ceramic systems, then with tests on paper impregnated systems and, since 1993 (the first time in the world), with extruded insulation systems (Project BEWAG) and composite materials. CESI today is among the world leaders for this typology of tests on electrical equipment.
